Michigan Tech’s online Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree program prepares graduates with an in-depth examination of advanced structural engineering theory, practical design, and analysis.

The program emphasizes structural engineering and focuses on expanding the civil engineer’s capabilities. Students learn advanced design techniques, including seismic design, examine structural dynamics, dig deeper into building code, and further examine the materials that create our world. The program prepares students to take the lead on more advanced civil engineering projects, pursue new career opportunities, and succeed in supervisory roles.

For admission to Michigan Tech's Online Graduate Programs, prospective students must hold an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree. GRE scores are not required. Admission decisions will also be based on relevant transcripts, resume personal statement, Statement of Purpose, and two recommendation letters.

Online Master of Science in Civil Engineering Featured Courses

Analysis of trusses and frames by the direct stiffness method. Use of a typical commercial computer code is stressed as a tool for complex structures. Introduces three-dimensional structures.

Introduction to the use of finite element methods in structural analysis. Covers the finite element formulation, 1- and 2-D elements, including isoparametric elements, axisymmetric analysis, plate and shell elements, dynamics, buckling, and nonlinear analysis.

Free and forced vibration of undamped and damped single degree of freedom systems. Multiple degree-of-freedom systems, including shear buildings and frames. Basic seismic design.
