Michigan Tech’s online Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree program prepares graduates with the design and analysis skills to take on advanced electrical engineering and communications projects at the cutting-edge of technology.

The program emphasizes communication and signal processing. Coursework focuses on the transmission, measurement, processing, analysis, and interpretation of all types of information-bearing signals. Students are prepared to take the lead on more advanced electrical engineering projects, pursue new career opportunities, and succeed in supervisory roles.

For admission to Michigan Tech's Online Graduate Programs, prospective students must hold an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree. GRE scores are not required. Admission decisions will also be based on relevant transcripts, resume personal statement, Statement of Purpose, and two recommendation letters.

Areas of Focus

Communication: Examine communications protocols and technologies from a theoretical and mathematical standpoint, as well as from an application and design standpoint. Focus on the high-level theory and technical aspects of the technologies for digital communications, wireless communications, and wireless sensor networks.

Signal Processing: Participate in in-depth examinations of technologies for creating and using sensors and sensor arrays. Study and analyze the different types of signals they send and receive. Gain a greater understanding of digital image processing, Fourier optics, and sensing and processing for robotics.

Online Master of Science in Electrical Engineering Program Featured Courses

Overview of problem-solving tools and techniques in engineering, considered from both the analytical and computational point of view. Systems of linear equations, eigenvalue and eigenvector computations, boundary value and initial value problems, Fourier analysis, large-scale systems, optimization. Mathematical modeling and computer programming.

Digital signal processing techniques with emphasis on applications. Includes sampling, the Z-transform, digital filters and discrete Fourier transforms. Emphasizes techniques for design and analysis of digital filters. Special topics may include the FFT, windowing techniques, quantization effects, physical limitations, image processing basics, image enhancement, image restoration and image coding.

Sensing modes, signal and image processing for industrial robotic automation processes. Emphasis placed on widely used sensors, including cameras and 3-D sensors for process control and computer vision for autonomous navigation.
